BRSL carries out rigorous studies aimed at answering questions across all three of our research pillars – Defense Analysis and Strategy; Technology, Governance, and (Inter)National Security; and Industrial Policy and Economic Competition. The Lab leverages our scholars’ technical and interdisciplinary expertise and UC Berkeley’s unique innovation ecosystem to enhance policymakers’ baseline understanding of areas vital to national security and shape optimal approaches to the most pressing issues.

AI and Strategic Early Warning
Early warning systems represent a too often overlooked part of nuclear command, control, and communications. This despite early warning systems being one of the first areas in which the United States and other countries integrated automation.
Firebreaks: Mitigating the Risks of AI Integration into Nuclear Operations
The Firebreak Project is a collaboration between the Arms Control Association, Berkeley Risk and Security Lab, and the European Leadership Network to bring together scholars of AI policy and nuclear weapons operations to address international policy challenges posed by increasing AI integration into nuclear weapons operations.
Mapping Trajectories of Chinese and U.S. AI Development and Escalation Risks
BRSL is conducting a multi-phase research project aimed at mapping the trajectories of U.S. and Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) development, reviewing each country’s approaches to undermining each other’s development, and assessing blind spots that may lead to escalation risks. This project is sponsored by the Future of Life Institute.
